Insomnia is a prevalent health complaint in the general population and is the most
common of all sleep disorders. Population-based estimates indicate that 10% of adults
report persistent and troublesome insomnia [

], and this rate increases to up to 30% among primary care patients [

]. Persistent insomnia carries an important burden for the individual and for society,
as evidenced by indices of functional impairments, quality of life, risks of depression,
and health-care costs [
